The first serious explorations started in August 1908. Mr. Dunac, a doctor living in Foix, accompanied by his two sons and by two young army officers, Leguiller and Rochette, venture in the Ayguo Perdent, follow the Fajal river till the confluence and discover the Underground River of Labouïche. Then in early November 1908, Edouard Alfred Martel (1859-1938), famous French speleologist, enters for the first time in Labouïche, especially exploring the upper part of the river.
At the end of that year, Dr Dunac and his two sons, Cassagne, de Ferlus, Lieutenant Rochette and Thibault go on 350 meters more, until the passage Dunac.
In August 1909, EA Martel leads a big expedition involving the Dr Cremadells, Rudeaux, Maréchal, Fournier, Dunac and his two sons, Cassagne, Ferlus, Rochette and Thibault. This exploration ends badly. The stream is fast, interpersed with erosion blades on wich pneumatic dinghies burst one by one. But 150 meters are anew discovered, Retreat with only one dinghy is difficult and this is the shipwreck where Martel almost drowned.
The team discourages, the war breaks out and this is only in 1935 that Labouïche is drowned from oblivion by a young designer, Mr Lagarde.
The same year, Dr Cremadells, helped by Mr Paul Salette, resume explorations and 800 meters of galleries are discovered. Mr Mandement, local prehistorian, tryes to organize the touristic development by establishing a study firm of the River in late 1935.
His project is successfully continued by paul Salette, who envisages to open the River to the public. Meanwhile, Norbert Casteret, French speleologist, and his friend Jospeh Delteil progress by seeking the origin of the river. Passing off the upper galleries, they cross the arch upstream and discover 600 meters more till the current terminus, another wetting vault or siphon, very cramped and over 20 meters deep.
Successive attempts in 1949 by Davies, a British explorer, and in 1955 by the Anglo-French expedition failed to cross the last siphon. 3800 meters of galleries have been discovered during those 30 years.
